Does it seem like everyone has a cold?

Does it seem like everyone started 2024 with a cold, ? 

Here are a few key reasons why it's important to be prepared for winter health and support your immune system during the colder months:


  1. Viruses thrive in the winter. Colder, drier air allows cold and flu viruses to spread more easily. Supporting normal immunity can help your body fight them off. Getting enough sleep, reducing stress, and taking vitamins C and D help strengthen immunity.
  2. Winter brings dry air. Heaters and cold winter air outside create dry conditions. This can irritate sinuses, cause bloody noses, and worsen respiratory conditions like asthma. Using humidifiers, drinking lots of fluids, and moisturizing skin can help.
  3. Lack of sun exposure and vitamin D. Shorter winter days mean less exposure to sunlight which is needed to produce vitamin D naturally. Low vitamin D can weaken immunity. Taking supplements helps ensure adequate levels.
  4. Cold weather is taxing on the body. Colder temps make the heart work harder. Winter conditions like snow shoveling or exposure to extreme cold can up the risk of health issues like heart attack, asthma flares, frostbite, etc. Layering up, limiting outdoor time in harsh temperatures, and not overexerting helps mitigate risks.
  5. Warm comfort foods tend to be heavier. Many classic cold weather dishes like stews, baked goods, casseroles are tasty but dense in carbs, fat, calories. Be mindful of portions and balance with vegetables, fruits, plant based proteins to help control winter weight gain. Staying active indoors also helps.
The key is supporting both physical and mental health ahead of winter to help ensure illness doesn't disrupt the season. Preparation is essential. Here are some of my favorite winter strategies:
  • Stellar C and Zinc - take the Stellar C daily throughout the season and if you (or someone in your household) start to have symptoms of an illness, take extra Zinc for 3 days.
  • Pure Defense - this is a great formula for supporting multiple facets of the immune system's functions when fighting off infections. Plus, it has NAC - an amino acid that prevents sinus and chest congestion. It's important to take this formula while feeling ill and at least 48 hours after you feel you have recovered to prevent further illness.
