A Christmas Eve Tradition I Still Love

A simple tradition from my childhood that has stayed with me through every stage of life, including this season we're all navigating together. Every Christmas Eve, without fail, my mother would give mt sister and I a brand-new pair of pajamas. She always made sure that when we went to bed on Christmas Eve, we slipped into something fresh, soft, and special. As a child, it felt magical… the whole night was wrapped in excitement and possibility. What I didn't realize then but understand so deeply now is that she was giving us more than pajamas. She was giving us a moment. A moment to feel cared for. A moment to be savored before the beautiful chaos of Christmas morning. And the sweetest part? That tradition never stopped. To this day, my mother still gives pajamas to us — now also including our significant others. We're all adults with full lives, busy schedules, and plenty of responsibilities… and yet somehow, we still look forward to that Christmas Eve moment with the same childlike joy. There's something grounding about it: slipping into softness, letting your shoulders drop, and feeling even just a little more at home in your body.
